Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Cheboygan Vision Source the leading provider of vision care products and services in Cheboygan.


Casey Festerling O.D.

Dr. Festerling grew up in Northern Michigan and received his Bachelors of Vision Science in 2017 from Ferris State University and his Doctorate of Optometry, with distinction, from Michigan College of Optometry in 2021.

He is a member of the American Optometric and Michigan Optometric Associations. He is also a member of Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) where he helps to provide eye examinations in developing countries.

Dr. Festerling specializes in eye health examinations for patients of all ages including pediatrics, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and corneal disease. He also specializes in Low Vision and specialty contact lens fitting.

He currently lives in Alanson where he enjoys hunting, fishing, boating, and coaching downhill ski racing.


Ronald Mead, O.D.

Undergraduate: Central Michigan University, Ferris State University

Doctor of Optometry: Ferris State College of Optometry

Married to Lori, childen: Jason, Kristin, Cameron and Trevor.

Dr. Mead’s professional associations include the Michigan Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He serves as a Vision Source Adminstrator for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Hobbies include: Golf, computer.


Peter Oppermann, O.D.

Grayling High School graduate with honors.

Bachelors of Vision Science: 1995 Ferris State University with honors.

Doctorate 1998 Michigan College of Optometry with honors.

Dr. Oppermann specializes in the eye health examination of patients of all ages, including the management of complicated eye disease as well as recommendation of all forms of eye wear.

He married and the father of two children, enjoys downhill skiing, hunting, boating, fishing and various other outdoor activities.

Dr. Oppermann is an active member of the Rotary Club of Gaylord, the Michigan Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He also serves as an Administrator for Vision Source of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.


Nathan R. Slezak, O.D.

Bachelor of Science , 2006 Central Michigan University.

Doctorate of Optometry 2010 with Highest Distinction, Michigan College of Optometry

Dr. Slezak specializes in eye health examinations for patients of all ages including pediatrics, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and corneal disease. He currently fits most of our specialty contact lenses.

Dr. Slezak enjoys coaching athletics, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife and 3 kids.


Betsy Killeen

Betsy was born and raised in Cheboygan, Michigan. After graduating high school, Betsy attended college at Saginaw Valley State University where she obtained a bachelors degree in secondary art education with a minor in communications and theater. After college she taught art and theater in Mt. Pleasant, but the north and her loving family drew her back home.

It’s evident that Betsy loves being the receptionist at Cheboygan Vision Source. She always has a smile and will always give you a warm welcome to our office. When you call or stop by Betsy can verify your insurance, check eligibility and schedule your appointment. Sometimes you can even find her doing the pre-testing.

Betsy is happily married to her husband Sean and is a proud mother of her amazing son Kade. She enjoys being a northern Michigan native who takes full advantage of all it’s beauty with her family and friends. She loves to go camping, boating, hunting, fishing, traveling, and exploring the nature of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. We are happy Betsy joined our team August of 2018.


Adrienne Perry

Adrienne is the most positive person you will ever meet. We are so very fortunate that she joined our team in July of 2014. She works at the front desk and has her job down to a science. When you either walk in the front door or call the office you will see and hear the smile on Adrienne’s face and in her voice. She absolutely loves her job and her co workers.

Adrienne has a son named Jack and a twin sister Alex who she loves going on adventures with and enjoying life together. She takes pleasure in spending time with family and going for walks.

Working hard to advance her career in the optical field, you will find Adrienne performing glasses adjustments and repairs. We are very blessed to have her at our office.


Robert Merrick, O.D.

Dr. Merrick, who is originally from Wyandotte, MI, moved to Northern Michigan during his grade school years. He graduated from Onaway Area Schools in 1978. He attained his Bachelor of Science degree from Ferris State College in 1981 and went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Ferris State College of Optometry in 1985.  Dr. Merrick has been an active member of both the American Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association for over 25 years. He has been very active in coaching youth hockey and has served on the board of Baraga Boosters in many key leadership positions. Dr. Merrick has also served as a member of the Cheboygan Board of Education.

Kayla Provo

Kayla started at Cheboygan Vision Source in 2020,

Though Kayla is new to optometry, she is a great addition to the team. She is one of the first faces you will see while entering the office. Currently working as a receptionist, you can also find her doing Special Testing, glasses adjustment and dispenses Kayla is dependable, quick to learn new information anyone has to offer
and a pure joy to have in the office After High School, Kayla stayed in her home town of Cheboygan to raise her two beautiful children, Lilah and Tanner. Kayla enjoys Camping, spending time with family, and being able to see her grandmother almost every day.


Nicole Weichnik

Nicole has been on a great adventure throughout her life and has lived in eight different states. She has a deep love for her dogs, Toby (11) and Mack (9 months) are Jack Russell Terriers’ and Lola (9) is a Shih Tzu. Funny stories about her fur babies are always a treat to hear. Nicole is a true inspiration to her co-workers and our patients as well. When not in the office, she enjoys gardening, taking walks, and visiting the great Upper Peninsula, all with her dogs in tow.

Nicole started in the optical industry in 1990 in Monterey, California. She is able to fabricate a lens from start to finish. She is a very energetic and skilled employee. She makes light in any situation and always looks for the best possible outcome with our patients. In the past she has worked as a receptionist and as an optician. She started working for Cheboygan Vision Source in September of 2020 as an optician and has moved on to being an amazing pre-tester for our Doctors. We are proud to have her as a member of our team.


Mandie AverillMandie Averill

Mandie attended school in Harbor Springs but has lived in Cheboygan since 2006. She has 3 children and her fiancé, Tyler. She loves to spend her time snowboarding, hiking, camping or boating. Family time is a must and brings her much joy to be close to them as well as her church family.

Mandie joined our team in August of 2021, Mandie brings a wealth of knowledge. She has been an optician 9 years in northern Michigan. She brings a plethora of experience coming from a busy ophthalmology practice. Troubleshooting vision problems caused by glasses and adjustments are among her favorite things.
